Video Transcript for Review of CE Smith Trailer Axles - Trailer Axle Beam with Studded Hubs - CES84XR

Hi, everybody, Steven here with etrailer.com. Let's take a look together at the CE Smith Trailer Axle with included stud hubs and a nice five on 4 1/2-inch lug pattern. Folks, this is gonna be rated at 18,00 pounds. It is a square axle beam, 'cause it's square tubing, not round, and it's a great part, one of the main parts actually of your trailer suspension system. So, this could potentially replace an axle on a trailer depending on all the measurements matching up to what yours has. Now, this has what's called straight spindles, meaning there's no drop and no rise on the spindles.

They're studded hubs and they're nice, sturdy, and they're gonna be corrosion resistant because they've got a nice coating on 'em to keep 'em as such. Now the bearing's braces, steel, grease caps studs, lug nuts, and the grease are already included and pre-installed right out of the box. Now some key measurements to make sure if this is gonna fit your trailer, replace it. There's two holes here. These are what we call the spring seat holes.

They could potentially be facing up like I've got it now or potentially facing down. Just depends on your trailer, how it was built. I will tell you if it's up versus down, it could potentially raise or lower your trailer deck height. So keep that in mind. And it could also potentially mess with your clearance on your fender to tire clearance.

So keep those kind of things in mind. Now, center of that spring seat to the other side center spring seat I get 38.42 inches and hub face, which basically you hook your tape right on the edge of the hub face itself to the other side hub face, I get 49 and a half inches. Overall on the beam it is gonna be 54 inches. I'm not able to show you that perfectly with the caps on the sides, but that's okay. That's also usually on the manufacturer sticker right here on the center of the beam.

Sometimes it can be laser etched or engraved on there as well. Now I do wanna zoom in here and move this around so I can show you the hub better. So you can see that spring seat hole lot better. Now the hub face is right here, so when I hook that tape measure on to measure that hub face, I'm grabbing literally right there on the edge. Again, everything's pre-greased. I don't know how well you can see it there, but yeah, there we go. We got a greaser right here and they're gonna come pre-greased like I mentioned, but easy access for greasing everything up. It has a solid grease cap, so most likely that means that there's no grease spindle inside here. It would not be an easy loop spindle, but you have the grease port back there on the hub, which makes it really easy to get to. Again, all your studs are on here. Again, it's a five lug on four and a half inch pattern. And that should do it for our quick look at that. So you're gonna get all the lug studs, lug nuts or whatever, everything included like I mentioned before, so you don't have to worry about any of that stuff. This would be a great addition as long as all those measurements match up to what you have on your current trailer. Well that's gonna wrap it up for our quick look together. I'm Steven, thanks for watching.

This axle and hubs worked for my jet ski trailer.
The factory hole drilled in the axle for the springs to sit in on each side didn't exactly line up with our trailer's spring hole spacing so we flipped the axle over and drilled new holes at the correct distance.
The new hubs seemed to have much more resistance when you spin them by hand than our old ones did so I called etrailer and the tech said that a certain amount of resistance is normal and that a hub that spins with very little resistance could indicate bearing issues.
We just finished installation, so we'll see how it rides down the road.

Great job on the axle swap, Carrie! When are you taking the jet ski's out next?

This was great experience. Got the replacement axle for my 1998 Outlaw boat trailer yesterday and it fit perfectly. Even used the cardboard spacers in the delivery box to position the axle and installation and was snap. My boat will be back on the water this weekend. Thanks!!!

Item is exactly what it says and looks to be great quality. Packaging was destroyed upon arrival and lug nuts were not packaged, but I believe that falls on the shipping co.

  • Replacement Axle Options For A Trailex SUT 200 Boat Trailer
That is a very unique trailer you have, Gordon. Maybe a little too unique. We have spindles that you could use as replacements (1-3/8" Diameter Stub # TRU59FR, 1-1/4" Diameter Stub # TRU94FR, or 1-1/2" Wide (square) Stub # TRU97FR) that all have a 1" shaft for the bearings (which would be part # L44643). That axle is going to be too short for us to have anything that would work, unfortunately. What I would probably do would be grab two of these spindles and some tubing that will slide...

  • What Is The Overall Length Of The CE Smith Trailer Axle Beam CES84XR?
Hey Steve, thanks for reaching out. The CE Smith Trailer Axle Beam # CES84XR is a 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" square tube. The overall length is 54". The hub face length is 49" and it measures 38-1/2" from spring center to spring center.

  • Parts Needed to Add CE Smith Trailer Axle to Trailer
Hey Jay, so the CE Smith Trailer Axle # CES84XR is a 1.8k axle so for leaf springs the part # e77SR would work great as this is for a 2k trailer axle. Then for a u-bolt kit you'd want the part # CE23102. For a hanger kit part # APS4. Is this an a-frame trailer or a pole tongue? Boat trailer so the lights need to be submersible? Do you have an idea as to how big of wheels/tires you'd need?

  • How to Find Replacement Axle for a 1988 NuWay Folding Trailer
Hey Bob! The CE Smith Trailer Axle Beam with Studded Hubs # CES84XR will fit your 1988 NuWay trailer if your current axle has 49" hub face and 38-1/2" spring center dimensions (see attached photo to compare). The overall beam length is 54". If this doesn't match what you have, please let me know what your axle measurements are and I'd be more than happy to help you find a replacement! I unfortunately don't have a listing of what came on your trailer so I don't have a way to verify this...

  • Looking for Replacement Axles for Karavan Trailer
We don't have a way to look up exactly what axle you need based on what you listed but we can still help. I found Karavan's site that has all of their replacement axles but the part number you mentioned is not listed. When picking out an axle for a trailer you'll need to know the overall length of it from hub face to hub face as well as the distance between the spring seat centers to pick out correct size. I also attached a link to a page with all of the axles we carry. You should note...

  • Recommended Metal Weld on Fender for a 12" Wheel
Thanks for the picture Rich. The BTR E-Z Lube Spindle for 2,000-lb Trailer Axles - 1-1/4" Diameter item # TRU44FR is exactly what you need if your hubs have item # L44649 inner and outer bearings. For a grease seal you'll want item # 34823. We don't sell axle tubes so you'd need to go through whoever is welding on your spindles to sort out what you need. We do sell entire axles with idler hubs that have a 5 x 4-1/2 lug pattern like the item # e82GR item # CES84XR or item # CE33201GA-HUB....

  • Width of CE Smith Trailer Axle Beam With Hubs CES84XR
Hey Andrew, The CE Smith Trailer Axle Beam with Studded Hubs # CES84XR is a 1-1/2 inch square axle tube.

  • Could CE Smith Trailer Axle Have New Holes Drilled at 40 inches Apart
Hey Gary, so the holes that are on the CE Smith trailer axle part # CES84XR are currently at 38-1/2 inch on center so there would easily be enough room to put new ones at just 3/4 of an inch past where they are now but you would need to rotate the axle 90 degrees.

  • Replacement Axle w/ a 49" Hub Face
Hey Earl! The only axle I have that has a 49" hub face is the CE Smith Trailer Axle Beam with Studded Hubs item # CES84XR. It has an 1,800 lbs capacity but comes with 5 on 4-1/2" hubs and has a 38-1/2" spring center. This is a square axle so it would be pretty easy to move the spring seats but I do not have a way to change the hubs out.

  • Options For Adding Regular 5 On 4-1/2" Hubs To A 1950s Boat Trailer
Hey Troy, thanks for reaching out. We actually get this question fairly frequently since a lot of older trailers used "shorter" hubs compared to the current standard. I am sorry to say that we do not offer any hubs to fit this type of shorter spindle and the parts you are looking for are obsolete. Your best options here will be to replace your spindles with new ones, or to replace the axle entirely. That way you will have no trouble fitting the standard 5 lug hubs. Adding new spindles...

  • Recommended Replacement Axle for a Malone EcoLight Trailer
Candance, I wasn't able to find any info on replacement axles for the Malone EcoLight # MAL53FR but I can say as long as your axle measures 49" from hub face to hub face, 38 1/2" from spring center to spring center, and has a 54" beam length, then the CE Smith Trailer Axle Beam with Studded Hubs # CES84XR will work. This axle does have an 1,800 lb capacity which is more than plenty, and has a 5 on 4 1/2 bolt pattern which will also work with that trailer.

  • Are The Spindles of the CE Smith Trailer Axle Beam # CES84XR EZ Lube
Hey Paul, are you asking about replacement zerk fittings that would fit the spindles of the axle? If so, this is not an EZ lube axle so it doesn't have those or have ability to have them added. Or were you asking about Bearing Buddies that replace the cap with ones that have grease fittings? I know it would seem like the grease fitting solutions would make life easier for greasing the hubs but in actuality we find that it's pretty easy to over fill the hubs with grease using them which...

  • Looking For New Axle, Hubs And Leaf Springs For A Northeast Brand Trailer
Hey Nate, I can definitely help and point you in the right direction. For the axle, I will need to know the weight capacity, hub face (HF) length and spring center (SC) length. There should be a tag or sticker on the axle that has this info, unless it is a really old axle in which case you will have to measure. For the hubs, knowing what axle you are going with will determine the correct hubs. I just need to know your hub bolt pattern so we can be sure the hubs will work with your wheels....

  • Do You Have an Axle for My Smoker Hub Face 52" and Spring Center 43", 5 on 4 1/2" Bolt Pattern?
Hello Travis, I am running into the same issue as you. The closest thing we have to a 52" hub face, and 43" spring center is the CE Smith Trailer Axle Beam with Studded Hubs - 5 on 4-1/2" - 54" Long - 1.8K # CES84XR which is Hub-face-to-hub-face length: 49-1/2" overall 54", and Spring-center-to-spring-center length: 38-7/16". I do have a different option, the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension - Standard Duty - No Drop - 1,200 lbs # ASR1200S02. It is definitely more pricey that going...

  • Solution for 2k Rated Axle with Spindles that are Too Short to Mount Hubs
Hey John, I think I have a better solution than trying to replace the axle as we don't have any square tube axles. You could replace the spindles with the part # TRU97FR which is correct or the hub part # AKIHUB-545-2-G-EZ-2K that you have. You'd need to find a welder with jugs for installing spindles though but that shouldn't be too difficult.
